When you choose social media platforms to post on, the following four questions need to be a “yes.”
1. Is my ideal client on this platform?
It does not matter if the platform is popular or fast-growing. Is your ideal client there? If not, it won’t make an impact on your business.
2. Do I enjoy creating content for this platform?
Users can tell when you enjoy showing up for them. Get creative with the platform and find a way that you like to be present. For example, you might not like IG Reels but love IG Stories! If you don’t enjoy creating that content, it will appear in your final product. Find content that you enjoy creating.
3. After six months of posting consistently on this platform, am I seeing direct sales from it?
It may take longer than six months to see results. Your progress is like a snowball for platforms like YouTube, Podcasting or Blogging. It starts slowly but grows faster and faster over time. Are you unsure about your platform results? Start tracking them! If your goal is to engage your audience, is that happening? Or, if your goal is to see sales, are you seeing them? Track those details and adjust your marketing plan accordingly.
4. Is it covering my content bases?
Your content should produce something evergreen, timely, and for both warm and cold audiences.
- Evergreen: Content that draws views for more than 48 hours. It can be found and seen on the platform for months or years after being posted. YouTube and Blogging are great examples.
- Timely: Content that is visible for 24 – 48 hours. Its shelf life is shorter, but it reaches your warm audience faster. The content is more simple to create, but might not serve you as well in the long run. It’s important to have powerful timely content so that when you promote something, you have a quick and easy way to speak to your people.
- Warm audience: Nurtures and engages the people who have already discovered you.
- Cold audience: Content that reaches brand new people.
One mistake that I often see is missing some of these criteria in your content. If you only create timely content, then you are tied to showing up and posting every day (while evergreen content allows you to take breaks). However, the opposite is also true. If you only create evergreen content, you are missing opportunities to quickly reach cold audiences elsewhere.
