5 Tips on Shooting Better Bridal Party Wedding Photos

July 18, 2018

Hey wedding photographers: Have you ever photographed bridal party portraits and your frustration level is just going UP… no one seems to be listening, and you’re not getting as much done as you’d hoped.

I’m sharing my top 5 tips on how to photograph bridal party photos FASTER, more efficiently, and how to get all the shots you want in the 30 minutes (or less) you’ll have for them on a wedding day!

  1. Have confidence. I know it can feel a little intimidating, because let’s be honest, it’s pretty much like public speaking… you’re usually speaking to and leading a group of 10-30+ people. It can be scary, but no one else will be confident in what you’re doing if you aren’t confident in yourself first. Remember that the couple hired you for a reason and there’s no reason to be not sure of yourself! If you mess up or aren’t sure, it’s okay! Just keep on going and act like nothing is wrong! :)
  2. Introduce yourself. I make it a point to introduce myself individually to each bridesmaid and groomsmen. This usually happens with the bridesmaids when I first arrive at the bridal suite. Guys, that means this is happening ALL the way when the wedding day starts, not just when portraits start!! For the guys, a lot of times my first interaction with them is the bridal party portraits. Before starting, be sure to stop and introduce yourself to each and every one!
  3. Don’t leave them wondering. Have a game plan and know exactly the shots you want to get so you can flow through them super quickly. Be thinking ahead and know what you want to do next when you’re almost done with the shot you’re taking! This will boost your confidence and help them to pay attention because they know you’ve got this!
  4. Have a pep talk. Let them know that you’re on their side and want to get them done as quickly as they do!
  5. Let them have fun. Once you have all the shots you need, ask if there’s a group shot that they want! Let them do something goofy because trust me, they’ll LOVE it and think you’re the best ever for letting them do their own thing! It’s not something you have to put anywhere on the internet, but it lets them laugh and have a good time!
