Best Lighting for Tik Tok & Reels Videos

April 7, 2021

If you’re jumping into the world of short form videos, like Tik Tok and Instagram Reels, you want to be sure the content you’re putting out is high quality. That extends beyond the topic you’re covering! You want to be sure the video you create is high quality – and today, I’ve got some tips on how to get the BEST lighting for Tik Toks and Instagram Reels. Trust me, it’s easier than you think!

Best lighting for Tik Toks and Instagram Reels

Lighting 101

Generally, the more light the better when you’re filming. Window light or cool toned light is always going to be better than warmer lights. Basically that means your window is going to be your best friend (and maybe a studio light!). They’re both cool toned and they work perfectly. These studios match natural light super well and allow everything to look natural. Turn off your overhead lights, open those windows, and throw on your studio light. Face your light source so it’s on your face directly and you’re ready to go!

While I’m filming, I face my window directly. I then place my phone in my smartphone tripod and film away! You could also place your phone or camera directly on the window sill depending how your room is set up.

Ring Lights

I LOVE my Ring Light. Seriously, I’m OBSESSED. When you plug it in, there’s a bunch of options to adjust brightness and change between different settings (think cool or warm!). And, you can even place your phone right in the middle of the light. Set it up in front of you and place the light in front of you. It emulates the natural window light inside – so this is great if you don’t have lots of windows in your filming space! If you need to move around your room to film your short form video so the background is cleaner, the ring light is a great option!! Ring lights give you SO much flexibility for where you’re going to film your Tik Toks and Reels.

Backgrounds DO matter!

So… let’s be honest, if you have good light but your background is SUPER cluttered, that gorgeous light doesn’t even matter. When you’re planning out your Tik Toks and Instagram Reels, work to find a de-cluttered space with clean, neutral walls (or ones that match your brand!). I’m not only talking about what’s in the background or the color, but I’m also talking about tidying things up! Make sure that desk of yours is clean. Seriously, it makes a huge difference!!

Filming short form video is a LOT of fun when you’ve figured out the best lighting for Tik Toks and Instagram Reels. Whether you have the perfect spot with a window or use your ring light for more flexibility, find a clean spot and go! I can’t wait to see what you create!
