Rolling with the punches when life & business don’t go as planned

December 1, 2023

Recently, I had a difficult week! I had to reevaluate what this quarter looked like for my family and my team at SK. I learned that rolling with the punches in my business mattered, and I want to share more in this episode!

Today, I’m talking about rolling with the punches when life and business don’t go as planned.

Our Account Hacked

A few weeks ago, I suffered a series of major snafus. First, my business bank account was hacked. The hacker listed himself as an administrator on our account, opened six debit cards attached to our checking account, and spent tons of money. This person charged almost $10,000 before we locked our account. Some of the money has been recovered, but a lot has not.

Feeling Unsure

Second, I was faced with a difficult business decision. For a few months, our team worked with a couple of clients on ideating and creating reels for their businesses. This process made a lot of sense with the strengths of our team members, and for a time, I was excited about that branch of the business.

However, as we began to gain traction, I felt tension. Being committed to clients on a month-after-month basis was not the business format I imagined for my team or my family. On top of that, I knew that a new agency would require tons of my time and attention. With many other offers I’m currently working on at SK, I did not feel like I had enough of myself to give to the agency.

A Big Decision

I felt a nudge from God that I set my focus on the wrong things. Although I was excited by the idea of a new stream of revenue for SK, when it came down to it, I felt that the agency was not the right fit for my team at this time.

Over the coming days, I grappled with this decision a great deal.

My Small Accident

Lastly, I suffered a fall! While holding my twin girls, I tripped over my dog. I braced most of the impact in order to keep the girls safe. In doing so, I landed on my elbow and injured my arm (thankfully, no broken bones). The girls were safe, albeit, frightened. I struggled to comfort them while in so much pain myself. My husband, Michael, had to leave for a trip shortly after.

I felt overwhelmed by the loss of money in my business, the big decision I needed to make, and taking care of my daughters and dogs alone with a hurt arm. My biggest worry was this: I was supposed to be filming my new online course. After the week’s events, I was way behind.

Making A Plan

Once Michael returned, I made the decision to officially close the reels agency. Immediately, I felt a sense of relief. Producing a great client experience while also preparing & launching new offers for SK was putting more pressure on me than I had even realized. My clients were kind & understanding. They even admitted they had begun to question the timing of committing to the agency themselves. I was so at peace with the way it came to a close.

At this point, I had a little bit of time in my schedule to film for my course. However, I knew that in those circumstances, I would not be able to produce the level of content I wanted to create. If I wanted my new course to be the best it could be, I needed to push my filming dates back. Adapting to circumstances like these is a huge part of rolling with the punches in my business.

Hustle Culture

In the business world, there is pressure to always “get it done,” and to push through, despite how exhausted you might feel. It’s important to recognize that, at times, you need to recalibrate, push things back, or reset in a way that works for you.

Make plans, yes, but do not feel chained to them. Your business should work for you and your life, not the other way around.

An Incredible Team

Another important part of rolling with the punches in my business was working with my team! I went to them and said, “Hey, this just did not happen this week. What do we need to do with this updated timeline? How do we need to redistribute tasks so that we can still get these things done?” Being surrounded by a supportive & willing team is a huge part of enjoying my life as a business owner.

While there are plenty of times when it’s important to stick to your plan, it’s also important to know when to slow down. Ask yourself, “What’s going to allow me to show up in my business in the best way possible for the customers who have entrusted me with their investment? How can I make sure I’m delivering on that well?”

Above & Beyond

For me, it’s crucial that what I am delivering is above and beyond what my students expect. If you’re not in the right headspace to push through and do something anyway, it’s better to take a step back.

Don’t be afraid to communicate with your team that you need more time on certain projects. As a leader, I try to extend that same grace to my team members when things do not happen as anticipated. It’s important to know that our projects do not fall on a single person. We are all responsible to each other as a team. We jump in when help is needed. Without that support system, my crazy week would have been even more difficult to trudge through.

A Crazy Week

It was a difficult week, but the flexibility built into my business helped us all to reconfigure our goals and create a new plan. I’m so thankful to both my business and my team for giving me the time to rest as I needed it. If you can relate, send me a message on Instagram! I would love to hear more about your experiences.

See you next week on Thursday at 8 AM!
