I’m going to take you behind the scenes as I take self portraits at home today! I’m constantly asked who takes my photos and the answer… is me!!! Portraits at home can be an easy way to add variety to your business’s photos, which can be used on social media and your website! So make a list of some spots in your home or nearby you want to get some self portraits – and don’t forget to list out the shots you want – and let’s get started!!
Setting Up & Technical Things
The first thing I do when I take self portraits at home is set up my backdrop. I put it in my living room because it has the best light but find what works best where you are! I have two drops that I use – a pink one and another called Bone. Both are from Savage. I also have a stand I use for these! For my portraits at home, I’ll be using my Nikon D750 and my Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art Lens. During the self portraits, I’ll also take some on my phone too! With my phone I’m going to use the timer feature. With my DSLR, it’s harder to get everything in focus without a remote… so I got one on Amazon! There’s about a 2 second delay but it’s super easy to set up the shot and then hit the button from where you are.
Your Self Portrait!
After I get my backdrop up, it’s time to test my camera settings! I have the focal point in the middle of my viewfinder, so I’ll grab a few test shots! I personally had to switch to my 35mm but when everything’s ready, it’s time to shoot. Just remember, you don’t need to take a million photos to have the few good ones you need for social media. Snap a few in each pose but don’t go too crazy! There’s just no need. Don’t forget to get some sitting and standing – variety is the spice of life after all!!
I can’t wait to see the self portraits you’re taking at home! This is such a fun and easy way to create new content for your website and social media without having to have a full branding session. Have fun with it!
