As a business owner hoping to market yourself online, you have probably heard one phrase repeatedly. “Give value in your content.” What does give value mean? That’s what we’re talking about today.
How can you create content that will create results for your business? It needs to be valuable to your viewers. Let’s talk more about what that looks like.
Leading with Value
What does give value mean? I have rephrased this concept to, “leading with value.” I ask myself, “How can I make my content have a value that people will talk about?” It gives my content a specific direction.
Leading with value alludes to the fact that you are giving away something for free in your content: information, tips, strategy, inspiration, etc. In return, you want to see organic conversions for your business. Your strategy is to give, give, and serve before ever asking someone for their credit card.
Why You Should Give First
This approach will help you to see your content, not only as giving away free information but also as a way to build your credibility, build an audience, and build a like, know & trust factor with those who follow you.
Instead of trying to hand out crumbs with your content, think of your content as the top of the funnel for your business. It’s bringing people to you. Your value should relate back to your ideal client as well as your paid offers.
How can you include value in your content?
Give Practical Advice
This applies to many businesses (not just education-based businesses). I started out as a photographer, and much of my content centered around wedding advice because I was involved in a lot of weddings. Try giving away step-by-step tutorials on how to do something as it relates to your niche or your offers.
Inspire Your Audience
Share your journey as you walk through it. Be as transparent and vulnerable as you’re comfortable with as you experience your wins and losses. When we think about leaders in an industry, the people we look up to are often those who are willing to be vulnerable.
Share about your past customers. Share their wins, transformations, and how you provided them with the tools to see that success. Celebrate them in your content!
Also, consider collaborating with someone in your niche who has very different offers from you. Share each other’s stories and inspire each other’s audiences!
Be Relatable
This is where you can bring in some humor. Relate to your audience in an “I’ve been there, too” kind of way. Try to relate light-heartedly on things that can bring attention to a deeper issue. What struggles have you experienced in your business? What would they find funny? Is there anything they might be surprised other people are experiencing too?
Make Them Think
How can you make someone stop scrolling with a strong statement or interesting fact? Is there something thought-provoking you could bring up? An example for my business (focused on business education) is: Imagine not growing a business because you’re too busy watching someone else do it.
Hopefully, it’s a statement or question that sits with them and causes them to take action. Be a leader and help your audience to approach things in a way they haven’t before.

Work Backwards
Think about what paid offers you want to sell and what audience you want to reach. Ensure that the top of your funnel (your content) aligns with those things. If not, you’ll attract an audience of people who will not consistently be interested in your content or your offers.
Personal Branding
I do love personal branding, but I believe it’s more suitable for your warm audience. If you’re leading with what you ate or did today to your cold audience, you might accidentally attract people who will never take an interest in your paid offers.
It’s great to share these things in IG Stories or to your email list, but probably not what you want to share on YouTube or heavily in your reels content.
