How to Break Into a New Photography Niche

November 12, 2020

Are you a new photographer only getting inquiries for family sessions, dreaming of booking weddings?

Or maybe you’ve been shooting weddings for years, but now you want to break into a new niche of branding photography.

I am a HUGE fan of niching down and only focusing on 1-2 areas of photography in your business! It help you to be seen as an expert in that one area, and to allow you to book more clients and raise your prices.

I’m excited to share in this blog post how to break into a photography niche and do it successfully that books up your calendar with dream clients.

Show ONLY what you want to shoot.

This might seem obvious, but if you don’t want to shoot family sessions… stop posting them on your social media! If you want to pivot away from weddings, stop sharing a lot of wedding related content.

Filter this through for your website, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, literally everything! What you show is what you will attract.

Photograph more niche-related portfolio work.

A bride probably isn’t getting to book you for her wedding if all you share online is family photos… A mom looking for newborn photography probably won’t book you if all you post is wedding photos.

If you need more content in the niche you want to break into, consider hosting a styled shoot or offering a free session to someone you hand pick (don’t post a public model call online!) This will allow you to get more portfolio work to share online to start sharing photos in that niche!

Share social proof from the niche you want to work in.

Reviews from past clients are huge! Start asking your clients of the niche you want to work more in for reviews.

You can even ask for reviews from anyone you’ve done free shoots for! If they’ve worked with you, they can provide a review for you to use in your marketing! This helps you to gain traction in that niche.
