Your Brokenness is Welcome Here

April 19, 2018

“Your brokenness is welcome here.” No truer words have been said about what the gospel is really all about.

In the photo above, my hair isn’t done… I have no makeup on… and I stopped half way through taking these photos (just for this post, ha!) to iron my shirt because it was wrinkly. But really, that is exactly how Jesus wants us to come to Him in our lives. Not put together, not perfect, not after making sure our lives are “in order.” He wants us just as we are.

Jesus wants alllll of our messy parts. All of our sin, guilt, shame, brokenness… He doesn’t want us to come to Him as “perfect” as we can. No, that is SO FAR from the truth. He wants us to come to Him as the broken people we are. Even after we decide to follow Him and want the goodness He has for our lives, we’re still going to struggle and mess up and not doing everything right. But that’s the whole point, isn’t it?

He WANTS to redeem us… to show us overflowing grace, grace that is so big we can’t even comprehend it… that’s the beauty of it all. There’s nothing we can do that can make us good enough. But He wants us anyway. How COOL is that? Right?! Wow, so amazing!!

Being more of a Type-A planner who struggles with finding identity in success, I totally understand how easy it is to fall into this trap of thinking we can “earn” our way to God. Or even the thinking that we’re not good enough… the thoughts of, “how can God love me as I am? I’m so broken, messy, and I can’t do everything perfectly. Who would want to deal with that?” But that’s the thing – no matter what we do, we CAN’T earn our way to God. Even one little slip-up means we don’t deserve to be with Him. But wow, that’s where the wonder and beauty of it all begins, because He gives us a way to be with Him for ETERNITY. That means forever and ever and ever. :)

Just because we put our trust in Him doesn’t mean the messy parts go away… I think a lot of us who put our faith in Jesus really struggle with this. It’s easy to think there’s this turning point where we had past struggles, but we don’t have those anymore because He redeemed us… and while it’s true that His grace covers all of our past and future sin, we will still sin. We’ll mess up. It doesn’t mean it will be easy… in fact, it might be harder, especially because we’re way more aware of how broken we are!! But the cool thing is if we put our trust in Him, He gives us hope, grace, and a whole lot of love. He gives us a way to have an overabundance of joy that really doesn’t make sense in the midst of any struggle, whether it’s the little day-to-day things or the huge hardships in life… but it just shows how amazing He is and how He really does want to bless us in our lives.

Feeling so grateful for this truth and I hope you were encouraged by it, too! Drop a comment below to let me know I’m not alone in this!
