When to Wear Your Wedding Veil

August 31, 2017

Hey brides! Today I’m chatting about when you should put on your veil on your wedding day! If you’re anything like me, you’ve been dreaming of putting on your veil and how it’ll be the finishing touch of you as a BRIDE! :)

If you’re doing a first look, I recommend you wait to put on your veil until right before the ceremony. I encourage this for a few reasons:

  1. It’ll be a new look for your groom to see when you walk down the aisle! It will give him something special to look forward to when the ceremony happens!!
  2. He won’t accidentally pull it off! I’ve actually photographed first looks before where the groom is so happy and throws his arms around his bride. In the rush of excitement, he accidentally pulls the veil right off his bride’s head- right in the middle of the first look! If you wait to put it on until later, you won’t have to worry about it and can just react to each other. I also recommend not carrying your bouquet for this very reason too! :)
  3. You’ll have a variety of portraits! In addition to the photos before the ceremony without your veil, we’ll also capture sunset photos (or just married photos) after the ceremony with your veil on. This ensures you will get a variety of portraits of yourself and with your groom!

If you’re not doing a first look, you’ll still want to wait until you walk down the aisle to put on your veil! Putting it on too early while you’re getting ready usually makes you feel more restricted in moving around and hanging out with your girls. In my experience, when a bride goes ahead and puts on her veil before she even puts on her dress, the veil usually gets pulled of anyways! So waiting until right before the ceremony is typically the most ideal way to do it. Just make sure to keep it on for all of the portraits after you’re husband and wife!

Of course, these aren’t hard and fast rules! If you really love your veil and want 100% of your portraits with it, you can also put it on right after your first look for all of the portraits to follow. This ensures you will be free to react while you see your man for the first time the day of!

Another quick tip! Make sure to leave your veil in (or bring it along) for sunset photos or just married photos! I try to do these portraits with all of my couples on their wedding day, and having veils adds to the dreaminess of these photos!! Sometimes veils are tricky and don’t like to stay in, so if this is the case, of course you can take it out- just make sure to bring it with you when we go to do portraits!
