If you’re creating video content – like a YouTube video or video podcast, then you should be creating short form videos to share on Reels, Tik Tok, or other video platforms. It’s a great way to share about your new episodes and build more trust with your audience. Plus, creating them doesn’t have to be hard! In this tutorial, I’m showing you exactly how to do it using Descript, one of my favorite softwares and Munch!! Let’s jump right in!
How to Create a Short Video
There are two ways to do this. First is to take a short clip (30-90 seconds) from your actual recording and turn it into vertical video content with captions. I’ll show you how to do that with Descript. The second option is using a new software, Munch. Munch will use AI to review a video (even something you’ve already posted!) and spit out 30-90 second clips for you to repost on other platforms. We’ll be going over both of these options today.
How to Create Your Clips in Descript
When you want to convert a horizontal video to a vertical clip and add closed captioning, I recommend using Descript. To do this, you’ll need a clip that you cut from your long-form video. I usually try to grab this while I’m editing. In Descript, go to “new project” and then drag and drop that video clip into the new project. Descript is amazing because it transcribes your video for you and allows you to edit your video based on that (see a tutorial on that here!). Once your video is loaded, convert it to a vertical format. Look to the left hand corner where the video is and select aspect ratio. Verticals are all 9:16. I like to drag and adjust my video so that the clip takes up the whole screen and there’s no black showing.
After you’ve set up the video, you can add closed captions. To do that, on the left hand side, hit the “+” icon and look for “captions”. Descript will automatically add the captions to your video. You can also adjust fonts, colors, and other preferences! We like to add the captions in the middle of the video because for most platforms, the top and bottom of videos is often going to be cut off or hard to read. My biggest suggestion is to just be sure that your font is easy to read! Once you’re done, hit “publish”, select video, high quality and save the video to your computer. It’s ready to share!
How to Create Short Videos in Munch
Now, if you want to create a short form video from content that you’ve already created, you want to try Munch. Open Munch, hit the “+” in the projects area, so you can start a new project. Decide which platform you want to create a clip for. For example, I’ll select Instagram and YouTube. Next, you upload a source. Here’s where you can either link to the URL of an existing video that’s been published or you can also add a video clip if you’ve been editing. It will take a few minutes to upload and while it does, you can select the style of the video you want (font, closed captions, etc.). The final screen of the upload is just the title, describing the video, and the length of the video you want. After you’ve done that, Munch will take 30-40 minutes to generate some videos for you.
When you’re done, you’ll be able to see the various clips that Munch has created for you. You can look through the options. Munch also creates AI generated captions that you could use or tweak for your own platforms. It’s really cool and it makes our jobs so much easier! Additionally, you can edit the clip if you want to change anything. When you’re done, you can export the clip or upload it right to the platform you created. Munch is a much faster option if you’re wanting to create clips from content that you’ve already published – without having to search back through your final videos.
If you have any questions about either of these programs, feel free to let me know! I hope that you find Munch and Descript helpful to create more short-form content. I’m all about working smarter, not harder!
